About Roanoke College

Roanoke College is an independent, private, coeducational, four-year liberal-arts college located in Salem, which is an independent city in Virginia, USA, with nearly 25 000 people, living within its limits, as estimated during the 2000 census.

The college was established in 1842 and was founded by Lutheran pastors David F. Bittle and Christopher C. Baughmann, as a boys' preparatory school. It was originally located in Augusta County, near Staunton, but was moved to Salem, in 1847, adopting its current name, which chosen in honor of the Roanoke Valley, in 1853.

Roanoke currently offers its students `35 majors, 30 minors, 23 concentrations and 780 courses during a two-semester academic year`, its mission being `to engage students in their development as whole persons through an integrative learning approach that stresses intellectual, ethical, spiritual and personal growth...`.

Athletics

Roanoke's athletic teams are nicknamed the Maroons and they compete in NCAA Division III, in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, with 9 men's and 10 women's teams. Their distinctive colors are maroon and gray.

Among Roanoke College's noteworthy alumni, there are also: David C. Robinson - movie producer, vice president, Morgan Creek Productions, John McAfee - software entrepreneur, founder of McAfee, John Payne - actor, star of the NBC series The Restless Gun, and Sean Burch - the first Virginian to summit Mount Everest (2003), set world records for the fastest ascents of Mount Kilimanjaro (2005) and Mount Fuji (2009).
